Senegal political shift with new prime minister appointment amid tensions

Senegal’s political landscape reshaped as Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo takes helm as Prime Minister

The President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo as the new Prime Minister, following a decree broadcast on national television. Lo, a former official at the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), previously served as Secretary-General in Faye’s initial government, which took office in April 2024, before being promoted to ministerial position.

This appointment marks another significant development in Senegal’s recent political turbulence. On May 22, President Faye relieved Ousmane Sonko, his former mentor, of his duties as head of government, amid growing tensions between the two figures.
