Romuald Wadagni officially sworn in as Bénin’s new president on May 24, 2026.
The newly elected head of state, President Wadagni, formally assumed his duties today. Following the ceremony, he personally escorted his predecessor, Patrice Talon, to his waiting vehicle, symbolizing a peaceful handover of power in Bénin.
A dignified, understated ceremony unfolded at the Palais de la République, also known as La Marina. Prior to the public proceedings, outgoing President Patrice Talon and his successor, Romuald Wadagni, engaged in a private, one-on-one discussion.
During the significant event, Romuald Wadagni took his solemn oath before the Constitutional Court. This pivotal moment was witnessed by a multitude of prominent Béninese political figures and approximately fifteen international delegations, highlighting the regional and global interest in Bénin’s democratic process.
President Wadagni formally pledged “to respect and defend the Constitution” of Bénin. He also explicitly acknowledged and accepted “to face the full force of the law in the event of perjury,” underscoring his unwavering commitment to constitutional integrity.
