Regional workshop in N’Djamena boosts legal protection for environmental journalists in the Sahel

A three-day regional workshop dedicated to enhancing the legal protection of environmental journalists kicked off this Monday in N’Djamena. Organized by Reporters sans Frontières in partnership with national Ministries of Communication and Environment, the event brings together over twenty media professionals from Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

This training initiative falls under the broader project ‘Defending and Protecting Environmental Journalism in the Sahel’, designed to create safer conditions for journalists covering environmental issues across the region. Participants will explore a range of critical topics, including their legal rights, existing protection mechanisms, risk prevention strategies, and collaborative approaches with legal experts and human rights defenders.

The primary goal is to equip journalists with practical tools to navigate the complexities of environmental reporting while minimizing professional hazards. Sessions will also address digital security, disinformation challenges, and the interpretation of both national and regional legal frameworks.

Ndeye Diary Ba, Reporters sans Frontières’ Sub-Saharan Africa Project Lead, emphasized the urgency of such training. “This workshop empowers journalists to report on environmental issues without fear, equipping them with the skills to identify risks, understand legal safeguards, and counter misinformation effectively.”

Chad’s Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson, Gassim Cherif Mahamat, highlighted the significance of N’Djamena as the host city. “In the Sahel, journalists face immense challenges in fulfilling their vital role of informing the public about environmental threats. This training provides essential resources to strengthen their safety, legal awareness, and capacity to combat disinformation—key pillars of modern journalism.”

Over the next three days, participants will engage in peer learning, skill-building exercises, and strategy sessions aimed at fostering safer reporting practices and amplifying environmental awareness across the Sahel.
