During a press briefing this Tuesday, Ousmane Sonko shared significant insights into his recent political separation. The leader of PASTEF meticulously detailed the exact circumstances that led to his break with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, finally putting an end to weeks of intense speculation.
Sonko recounted that President Faye initiated their meeting, summoning him to the Presidential Palace. “He informed me that he believed our collaboration could no longer continue,” Sonko disclosed, adding that President Faye cited several public statements he considered problematic. Faced with this ultimatum, the patriotic leader explained that he chose not to simply accept the decision passively: “I made it easier for him by stating that I would comply. I told him if he intended to dismiss me, he should simply take responsibility and do it.”
Sonko further revealed that he had, at an earlier point, proposed to the President that he step down from the government to assume leadership of the National Assembly, while still pledging his full support for the administration. However, this offer did not materialize.
Clearly intent on not bearing the blame for this parting of ways, Sonko emphasized his position to the public: “I could not be held responsible for this separation.”
