Addressing the 2029 presidential race speculation
During a recent televised interview, Ousmane Sonko, leader of Senegal’s Pastef party and President of the National Assembly, fielded questions about his potential candidacy in the 2029 presidential election. His response underscored the importance of timing and party processes.
Sonko emphasized that discussions about his candidacy remain premature, despite widespread media coverage suggesting otherwise. «There are many initiatives claiming I will run in 2029, but I prefer to wait for the right moment,» he stated. «My party will select its candidate when the time comes. We are not there yet.»
Focus on party strategy over individual ambitions
The Pastef leader reiterated that his party’s decision-making process takes precedence. «My party will invest the candidate it chooses to support,» he explained. «Right now, we are focused on other priorities.»
No comment on Diomaye Faye’s potential bid
When questioned about the possibility of incumbent President Diomaye Faye seeking re-election, Sonko maintained a neutral stance. «He has his own path to follow, and I have mine,» he noted. «I won’t speculate about the president’s potential candidacy. That’s for others to discuss.»
Sonko’s remarks reflect a strategic approach to Senegal’s political landscape, where party alignment and collective decisions often shape electoral outcomes.
