The Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) has responded sharply to the Constitutional Council’s decision to reinstate Ousmane Sonko as a member of the National Assembly. In a statement released on Thursday, the opposition coalition argued that the ruling does not resolve the ongoing political debate surrounding the former Prime Minister’s return to his parliamentary seat.
The FDR acknowledged the judges’ decision, which declared them unable to rule on the charges of forfeiture raised by the plaintiffs. However, the coalition emphasized that this technicality does not invalidate the broader objections raised against Sonko’s reinstatement as leader of the Pastef movement.
The opposition alliance went further, criticizing both Ousmane Sonko and the ruling party for allegedly fostering a climate of incompetence and arrogance. The FDR also took issue with recent remarks made by the Pastef leader during international media interviews, describing his statements as a distorted interpretation of national identity.
Highlighting what it calls a troubling period for Senegal, the coalition warned of dangerous deviations within the current administration. The FDR reaffirmed its commitment to working within the framework of republican institutions and upholding the law while continuing its political struggle.
Beyond the Sonko case, the opposition front issued a rallying cry for broad-based unity among political and social forces opposed to the government. The coalition urged political parties, civil society organizations, labor unions, youth movements, and democrats alike to join forces in forming a united front. This alliance, it claims, would present a viable alternative to the existing leadership.
This declaration followed closely on the heels of the Constitutional Council’s decision, which dismissed legal challenges against the procedure that enabled Sonko to reclaim his parliamentary mandate. The ruling effectively ended the opposition’s legal battle over this particular issue.
