Nantes vs Toulouse match abandoned after pitch invasion and flares
Abandoned indefinitely following supporter unrest and pyrotechnics at the 22nd minute
The final Ligue 1 clash of the season between Nantes and Toulouse at the Stade de la Beaujoire was called off for good on Sunday night. Authorities confirmed the match would not resume after consultations between club representatives, the Loire-Atlantique prefecture, police officials, Ligue de Football Professionnel delegate Olivier Chovaux, and referee Stéphanie Frappart.
Nearly 40 minutes after play was halted due to invading fans and smoke bombs, Frappart addressed the press: « You witnessed, as we did, supporters storming the pitch alongside pyrotechnic displays and object-throwing. This forced officials and both teams back to the locker rooms. » She added: « The decision has been made to abandon the match permanently for safety reasons. » The announcement was met with cheers from Nantes ultras. The stadium was fully evacuated following further smoke bomb detonations.
Marina Ferrari condemns the violence
The match was stopped in the 22nd minute with the score level at 0-0 after Nantes supporters invaded the pitch in response to flares and thrown objects. Referee Frappart ordered both teams to the dressing rooms. However, Vahid Halilhodzic, Nantes’ coach, remained on the sidelines, shouting at the approaching fans before being restrained by security personnel. After several tense minutes, the supporters returned to their stands, secured by CRS riot police.
Marina Ferrari, Minister of Sports, swiftly condemned the disturbances: « The violence seen moments ago during the FC Nantes vs Toulouse FC match is unacceptable and has no place in sport or our Republic. I strongly condemn these actions and extend my full support to the players and supporters who attended peacefully. The prefect’s decision to abandon the match was necessary—such incidents cannot be tolerated. » She praised the rapid response of stewards and law enforcement, stressing that « everyone must take responsibility, and those responsible for these acts of violence will face severe consequences. »
