Morocco gains key role in Mediterranean parliamentary assembly

The Kingdom has been elected as a member of the Bureau of the Assembly and entrusted with the presidency of the Artificial Intelligence Commission, reflecting the trust placed in Morocco’s parliamentary diplomacy and its growing influence within this Euro-Mediterranean body.

A Moroccan parliamentary delegation attended the 10th Summit of Parliament Presidents and the 19th plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), held over the weekend at the Egyptian Parliament’s headquarters in the new administrative capital.

Led by Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, Vice President of the Chamber of Representatives, the delegation seized the opportunity to bolster the Kingdom’s presence within PA-UfM’s governance structures.

During the margins of the debates, a meeting of the Bureau and the enlarged Bureau took place. The plenary session confirmed the composition of the new PA-UfM Bureau for the 2026–2030 term, along with the leadership of permanent commissions.

As a result, Morocco was elected as a member of the Assembly’s Bureau and entrusted with chairing the Artificial Intelligence Commission—a clear endorsement of the confidence placed in Morocco’s parliamentary diplomacy and the prominent role now played by the Moroccan Parliament within this Euro-Mediterranean institution.

During the plenary session, Fassi Fihri, speaking on behalf of the Moroccan Parliament, emphasized that PA-UfM remains a vital framework for strengthening dialogue and cooperation between parliaments on both sides of the Mediterranean.

He highlighted how the selected themes—artificial intelligence, youth participation, and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East—reflect a shared awareness among the Euro-Mediterranean parliamentary community. These themes address a period of profound transition that goes beyond technological change, touching on the reshaping of sensibilities, cultures, influence levers, and decision-making mechanisms.

The Vice President added that the Kingdom, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, continues to advance a modernization drive in the national economy, strengthen digital transformation, and develop technological infrastructure. This aligns with a strategic vision that positions knowledge-based economy as a key driver of sustainable development, enhanced competitiveness, and Morocco’s consolidation as a reliable partner across the Mediterranean, Africa, and beyond.

The Moroccan delegation, which included Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati, and Ibrahim Aâba, took part in meetings of various bodies and commissions. They contributed to discussions on priority issues for the Mediterranean region: parliamentary diplomacy, artificial intelligence, youth involvement in decision-making, and strengthening security, stability, and shared development.

The proceedings concluded with a call to maintain parliamentary coordination among member states and to reinforce the role of PA-UfM as a platform for dialogue and trust-building, serving the security, stability, sustainable development, and shared prosperity of Mediterranean peoples.
