Less than a week after reclaiming control of the Anéfis area in northern Mali, Malian forces and their Russian mercenary allies faced a fresh ambush over the weekend.

The military’s return to Anéfis proved short-lived as a convoy was targeted by a coordinated attack on Saturday, just days after securing the locality. The strike exposed the persistent threats lurking in the region, despite recent counterinsurgency efforts.

Russian mercenaries fighting alongside Malian troops were also caught in the ambush, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of security operations in the area. Jihadist groups continue to demonstrate operational capacity, challenging the stability of recaptured zones.
