Militants strike five villages near Bandiagara in Mali, leaving nearly two dozen dead
Jihadist fighters launched coordinated attacks on multiple communities in central Mali late Saturday, targeting villages across two administrative zones near the town of Bandiagara. The assaults involved simultaneous strikes on Logo, Soulakanda, and Dimbal in Dimbal commune, as well as Ogossagou and Kouroundé in the Bankass area.
The clashes pitted militants from the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) against local defense groups known as dozos, who often fill security gaps left by state forces in remote regions. According to community leaders and witnesses, the violence resulted in at least twenty fatalities, including civilians and dozo fighters.
A senior dozo commander, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration over the lack of military intervention during the assaults, noting that no official statements or acknowledgments were issued by security forces. Attempts to reach army representatives for comment were unsuccessful.
fear spreads as displaced residents seek safety
In the aftermath of the attacks, panic swept through surrounding areas, prompting many residents to flee toward Bankass and neighboring settlements. The sudden influx of displaced people has raised concerns among humanitarian workers about the capacity to provide adequate shelter and assistance, particularly as local resources were already stretched thin following earlier violence in the same region earlier this month that left more than fifty people dead.
Local officials and civil society representatives report growing unease over the recurring nature of these attacks and the apparent inability of security services to prevent or respond effectively to the threats posed by armed groups operating with impunity in the region.
JNIM spokespersons had previously warned of intensified operations against villages harboring dozo fighters who refuse to comply with local agreements imposed by the militants, signaling a potential escalation in retaliatory violence in the coming days.
