Tuareg rebels of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) coalition gather at the Kidal roundabout in Kidal, on April 26, 2026. April 25, 2026's shock attacks, synchronised by Tuareg rebels of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) coalition and the jihadist Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), targeted several areas in the vast arid country. Fighting resumed on April 26 in several areas, including Kita near Bamako, Kidal, Gao and Severe. Tuareg rebels meanwhile announced an agreement allowing Russian forces backing Mali's army to withdraw from the northern city of Kidal, which they claimed was "totally" under their control. Mali’s military junta in disarray after Africa corps retreat from Kidal

An orchestrated counterattack has left Africa Corps, previously known as Wagner Group, in disarray. Recent social media footage captures Tuareg fighters from the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA) and the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) parading on abandoned Russian-made armored vehicles. The mercenaries hastily retreated from Kidal, a strategic city in northern Mali, after a coordinated offensive by these armed groups.

Two days following the capture of Kidal, the 400-strong Africa Corps paramilitary unit evacuated the area under heavy escort. The FLA took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce a secured withdrawal agreement had been reached between Azawadian forces and Africa Corps personnel to ensure their safe exit from the city.
