The Malian military command disclosed that the targeted militant, identified by multiple aliases including Oumar Kéréna, Farouk, and Housseini Mawdo, was eliminated in a drone strike conducted on June 3 near Mougnan village—approximately 40 kilometers from Djenné in central Mali.

Security authorities described him as a former member of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa who rose through the ranks to become a central figure in Mali’s jihadist networks and regional operations.

Key figure in regional extremist networks

According to military sources, the slain commander previously operated in the Serma area before overseeing armed activities spanning Sikasso, Koutiala, and border zones in neighboring Burkina Faso. His elimination represents a significant blow to the JNIM coalition, recognized as the principal Al-Qaeda-affiliated armed alliance active across the Sahel.

Government escalates counterterrorism measures

This operation coincides with Bamako’s announcement of a groundbreaking financial reward system introduced on June 4. The initiative offers up to two billion West African CFA francs for information leading to the capture or location of top terror network leaders, with the largest bounty targeting Iyad Ag Ghali, Mali’s most-wanted fugitive.

The strike underscores the deepening military pressure against jihadist factions amid escalating armed confrontations and persistent security challenges plaguing Mali and surrounding Sahel nations.
