Mali journalist detained after criticizing military government at media forum

Mali journalist detained after open criticism of ruling junta at Bamako media forum

A prominent Malian journalist has been remanded in custody following a court summons, just days after delivering a scathing critique of the military leadership during a high-profile media event in Bamako.

The journalist, Chahana Takiou, editor-in-chief of the biweekly newspaper 22 Septembre, was questioned by prosecutors from the cybercrime unit on Monday afternoon. His detention was ordered on charges of “undermining state credibility through the judicial system,” according to judicial sources.

Detention sparks condemnation from press freedom advocates

Family members confirmed the journalist’s incarceration, while the Maison de la Presse issued a statement expressing “shock and deep concern” over his arrest.

The statement condemned the detention as “a blatant violation of press freedom and freedom of expression,” arguing that the charges contradict Mali’s press laws and instead invoke cybercrime legislation. The organization warned that the move “tarnishes the image of justice, the media, and the country as a whole.”

Controversial remarks at regional media event

Takiou’s arrest follows his remarks at the Panafrican Media Forum, held in Bamako from June 3 to 6, where he openly questioned the lack of progress toward peace in Mali. Speaking during a panel moderated by Idrissa Hamidou Touré, prosecutor at a Bamako court, he declared:

“There is no peace process in Mali. Instead of trying journalists under press laws, authorities are applying cybercrime legislation to silence critics.”

The journalist’s outspoken comments during the forum appear to have triggered the legal action against him.

What’s next for the detained journalist?

The case against Takiou is scheduled for preliminary review on July 27, where further legal proceedings will be determined. His detention has intensified debates over press freedom and government accountability in Mali, a country already grappling with political instability and security challenges.
