Lyon captain Wendie Renard on Barcelona’s Champions League triumph: “the score doesn’t reflect the game at all”
The Lyon captain expressed her disappointment after her team suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League final on Saturday. Despite the scoreline, she insisted that the outcome did not accurately represent the match’s flow or Lyon’s performance.
“we were punished for missing our chances”
“The score is harsh, but in my view, it doesn’t mirror what happened on the pitch,” Renard told reporters. “Barcelona played very well and were clinical when it mattered. We had opportunities, but we didn’t convert them. That’s what cost us the game.”
She praised Barcelona’s efficiency, particularly their deadly finishing in key moments. “They were ruthless in front of goal. We weren’t, and football is unforgiving when you miss those chances.” Renard added that Lyon struggled to adapt to Barcelona’s counterattacks, especially in the closing stages of the match.
lessons for the future
Reflecting on the defeat, Renard emphasized that setbacks are part of the game’s learning process. “A career or a season isn’t always smooth sailing. This is an experience we must take from. There are things we need to improve, but reaching a final is a privilege we can’t afford to waste.”
She concluded with a message of resilience: “This is life, this is football. We must keep working, keep pushing forward, and learn from every match.”
