A formal complaint has been lodged with the prosecutor’s office in Dakar, targeting political figure Ousmane Sonko over statements he allegedly made regarding the alleged entry of ‘dirty money’ into the sacred city of Touba.
The complaint, submitted on July 14, 2026, by the Collectif des petits-fils de Serigne Touba, was officially registered the following day. It is signed by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, who argue that Sonko’s remarks undermine the moral and spiritual integrity of Touba and its residents.
According to the complainants, Sonko declared during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters that ‘dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba.’ They contend that such claims could tarnish the city’s reputation, which was founded on principles of faith, integrity, and adherence to Islamic teachings.
Legal demands and requested investigations
The collective is urging the prosecutor to initiate an immediate inquiry to clarify the context, validity, and implications of Sonko’s statements. They are also requesting his formal hearing to allow him to substantiate his claims or retract them if necessary.
The complaint further calls for a thorough investigation to determine whether Sonko’s remarks constitute defamation, dissemination of false information, or other potential legal violations under Senegalese law. While no charges have been formally filed yet, the complainants reserve the right to pursue legal action if the evidence supports it.
Evidence and supporting documents
The authors of the complaint claim to possess multiple forms of evidence, including video recordings of Sonko’s statements, transcripts, press publications, and other relevant materials. They assert that these documents will help establish the truth and hold those responsible accountable for any wrongdoing.
