Action was halted indefinitely in the final game of the Ligue 2 season when smoke bombs were hurled onto the pitch at Stade Armand-Cesari. Fans reacted furiously after Le Mans scored their second goal during stoppage time, sealing an emotional promotion to Ligue 1.
Historic promotion for Le Mans FC
The club celebrated its return to France’s top flight for the first time in 16 years, a milestone described by president Thierry Gomez as a “collective victory” for the entire organization. “This promotion represents more than just a sporting achievement; it’s a triumph for everyone involved with the club,” he stated. “While the challenge ahead is significant, our commitment remains unwavering.”
Bastia relegated to Ligue 3 after pitch invasion
The French Football League (LFP) handed down strict sanctions against SC Bastia, including two enforced matches behind closed doors and a suspended home fixture. Earlier in the season, the club had already lost a match by default after a player was struck by a smoke bomb during an away game.
The final standings were confirmed despite the postponed match, with Le Mans securing second place in Ligue 2 behind Troyes. Meanwhile, Laval’s victory in their playoff sealed Bastia’s relegation to Ligue 3, capping off a turbulent end to the season.
Even before official confirmation, Le Mans players began celebrating in their locker room and later with fans outside their training facility late Saturday night. The club’s journey has been remarkable, climbing from National (France’s third division) in the 2024-25 season to Ligue 1 just one year later.
