DRC-Egypt military ties: President Tshisekedi orders swift execution plan for soldier training program

Defense cooperation meeting between DRC and Egypt

Kinshasa, June 14, 2026 — President Félix Tshisekedi has directed the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) to develop and submit a detailed implementation plan for a military training program in Egypt.

The directive follows President Tshisekedi’s recent official visit to Cairo, where he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi from June 10 to 11. The two leaders assessed bilateral cooperation rooted in shared African values of sovereignty, independence, and continental dignity.

During the visit, several cooperation agreements were signed in investment, political consultation, urban development, and health sectors, reflecting both nations’ commitment to tangible outcomes benefiting their citizens.

Strengthening military partnerships amid regional security challenges

Among the key outcomes was a decision to significantly enhance military cooperation between the two countries. In response to ongoing security threats in eastern DRC, particularly from the AFC/M23 rebel alliance allegedly backed by Rwanda, President Tshisekedi emphasized the need for rapid modernization of the FARDC.

The President instructed the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, in coordination with the FARDC Chief of Staff, to finalize a comprehensive execution plan for the military training initiative and present it for approval. This move aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Congolese army.

Strategic vision for African cooperation

Speaking to reporters during the 92nd Council of Ministers meeting on June 12, a government spokesperson reiterated President Tshisekedi’s commitment to deepening strategic partnerships with African nations. The focus remains on development-oriented cooperation that advances mutual interests and continental unity.

The military training program in Egypt is expected to play a crucial role in building the FARDC’s technical and operational expertise, supporting the government’s broader agenda of national security and regional stability.
