The Tottenham Hotspur side managed by Roberto De Zerbi failed to secure their Premier League survival in their penultimate match. A 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the 37th matchday has left the North London club in limbo, with their fate now resting on the outcome of this weekend’s final game.
Chelsea’s early strikes put Spurs under pressure
Goals from Enzo Fernández and Andrey Santos early in the second half left the visitors with an uphill battle. Despite Richarlison’s late consolation, Chelsea’s dominance proved too much for Tottenham to overcome. The London club’s defensive lapses were once again exposed, with the second goal stemming from a careless turnover in midfield.
De Zerbi defends his team’s performance
While the result was disappointing, the Italian manager refused to criticize his players, instead praising their effort. «We created a strong opening chance with Son, but Sánchez made a crucial save. We stayed in the game until the second goal, which resulted from a naive mistake. Overall, I believe we played well, even though we lost,» he remarked after the match.
With survival still within their grasp, De Zerbi has urged his squad to focus on the final challenge ahead. «There’s no time to dwell on this result. We must prepare for the decisive match in front of our fans. With our quality, character, and pride, we have the tools to respond. I’m confident because the performance today was strong,» he added.
Tottenham’s survival hinges on a positive result
Currently, Tottenham hold a two-point advantage over West Ham United, who face Leeds United on the final day. In the event of a tie in the standings, goal difference would become the deciding factor—an area where Spurs hold a clear edge (-10 vs. -22). For De Zerbi and his players, there is no margin for error in the upcoming clash against Everton.
The stakes could not be higher as the club fights to maintain its top-flight status for another season.
