Hundreds of jubilant supporters poured into the streets of Dakar this Sunday, May 17, to enthusiastically welcome Ousmane Sonko, leader of the ruling Pastef party and Prime Minister of Sénégal. The occasion was a “grand pedestrian hike” meticulously organized by his political movement’s departmental coordination.
Dressed entirely in white, the Prime Minister was met with a fervent crowd, whose chants of “Sonko Président” echoed through the city at various points along the route. He immersed himself in the throng, engaging directly with the enthusiastic participants. Several influential figures from the Pastef party also joined the march, including Dakar Mayor Abass Fall and the Minister of Higher Education, Daouda Ngom. The procession commenced at the iconic Place de la Nation and was scheduled to conclude at the Rond-point Jet d’eau.
The theme for this significant pedestrian event was “Dakar marching behind the Pros,” signifying strong backing for Sonko’s vision. Its core objectives included celebrating robust citizen participation and peaceful collective action, while also reinforcing unity around the comprehensive project championed by Prime Minister Sonko. This demonstration of solidarity comes as the party actively prepares for the elective congress to choose its president, slated for June 6, 2026.
