Legal battle over disputed property in Dakar delayed again
The Dakar Court of First Instance has once again postponed the highly publicized case between businessman Mame Mbaye Niang and opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. The new hearing date is set for 22 July 2026, following a request from Sonko’s defense team to review recently filed evidence.
Dispute over Keur Gorgui villa escalates
The legal confrontation stems from a 200 million CFA francs compensation ruling in favor of Niang, initially awarded after Sonko was found liable for fraudulent property transfer. The businessman seeks to reclaim possession of a villa located in the Cité Keur Gorgui neighborhood, valued at millions, which he claims was illegally transferred to Sonko’s relatives to evade enforcement of the court order.
Niang’s legal representatives argue that the property transfer—documented on a 264m² plot under lot number R/17—constitutes a deliberate act of insolvency planning. They contend that Sonko’s associates executed the transfer to shield the asset from potential seizure, despite the final condemnation of two months’ imprisonment and financial penalties against the opposition leader.
Chronology of delays
The case has faced multiple adjournments since its inception. An earlier postponement in June allowed Niang’s legal team to prepare counterarguments against Sonko’s defense filings. The latest delay, granted at the defense’s request, underscores the procedural complexities of high-stakes civil litigation in Senegal’s judicial system.
