Chelsea handed suspended transfer ban after premier league investigation
Chelsea Football Club has avoided a six-point deduction after successfully appealing an initial sanction imposed by England’s football governing body. The club instead received a suspended transfer ban following investigations into financial irregularities dating back to its ownership under Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.
The Football Association (FA) confirmed that most violations occurred between 2010 and 2016, a period when Abramovich controlled the club. Upon acquiring Chelsea in 2022, the new ownership uncovered these breaches and reported them to authorities. Last September, the FA formally lodged 74 separate charges against the London-based club.
Between 2011 and 2018, Chelsea made payments totaling £47 million—equivalent to around €54.5 million—to unregistered agents and third parties. Several high-profile transfers fall under scrutiny, including the signings of Belgian forward Eden Hazard from Lille in 2012, Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o, Brazilian winger Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013, German midfielder André Schürrle from Bayer Leverkusen the same year, Serbian defensive midfielder Nemanja Matić from Benfica in 2014, and Brazilian defender David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016.
