Cameroon political activist Jacques Bertrand Mang alleges torture by authorities

Union Démocratique du Cameroun demands immediate investigation into activist’s alleged mistreatment

The Union Démocratique du Cameroun (UDC) has issued a strong condemnation of the alleged torture and inhumane treatment of political activist Jacques Bertrand Mang, following reports of his mistreatment at a police station in Douala on June 30, 2026.

In a statement released by UDC President Patricia Tomaino Ndam Njoya, the party denounced the reported abuse as a grave violation of constitutional rights and fundamental freedoms. The UDC emphasized that no form of dissent, disagreement, or civic engagement justifies the use of torture, violence, or degrading treatment against any citizen.

The party has called on Cameroonian authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident to ensure the protection of Mang’s physical and moral integrity. It has also urged the state to uphold the rule of law and guarantee that his rights are fully respected throughout the process.

Jacques Bertrand Mang, a prominent voice against social injustices, government accountability issues, and daily hardships faced by Cameroonians, has been a recurring figure in national debates. On June 30, 2026, he live-streamed from a police station in Douala, pleading for his release after allegedly being subjected to torture and mistreatment. His pleas were met with dismissive responses, including claims that he could not leave while still angry, despite his repeated demands to exit the facility.

The activist, known for his vocal criticism of law enforcement, public officials, and political figures, has faced multiple arrests and forced psychiatric evaluations in the past. His social media posts frequently highlight alleged misconduct by police, gendarmerie, customs, municipal authorities, and elected leaders. Recent reports indicate he was detained under custody orders, raising further concerns about due process and the treatment of dissenting voices in the country.
