Bassirou Diomaye Faye unveils new political party in Senegal

Senegal is experiencing a pivotal moment in its political landscape. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially launched a new political party, the Patriotes républicains, marking a significant shift in the country’s governance framework. This move follows a period of intense political realignment and underscores the evolving priorities of the Senegalese leadership.

From Pastef to a new political vision

The creation of this new party comes after President Faye’s decision to step down from his leadership role in the Pastef (Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité), the party that propelled him to the presidency. This separation was a deliberate move to uphold his commitment to keeping the presidential office distinct from partisan politics—a promise he made during his electoral campaign.

The launch event took place in Dakar, where President Faye emphasized the new party’s core values: patriotism, grassroots engagement, and a shared commitment to Senegal’s development. The initiative represents the culmination of a restructuring process that began in November 2025, aimed at consolidating the presidential majority into a cohesive and unified political force.

A coalition of 437 political entities

During the constituent assembly, Aminata Touré, the General Supervisor of the Diomaye Président coalition, announced that 437 political parties and movements had agreed to merge under the banner of the new party. This unprecedented consolidation signals a strategic effort to streamline governance and foster collective action within the presidential majority.

A response to political tensions and constitutional challenges

The timing of this launch is noteworthy. It follows the dismissal of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in May 2026, a decision that highlighted deep-rooted political disagreements within the executive branch. Additionally, the move aligns with the Constitutional Council’s July ruling, which declared unconstitutional the legislative process behind the constitutional revision law—a decision President Faye actively pursued.
