In Ouagadougou, the Association of Young Entrepreneurs of Burkina Faso brought together trade professionals on June 20, 2026, for a landmark national forum under the banner ‘From Words to Action: Forging a Robust Patriotic Economy in Burkina Faso.’ The event served as a pivotal platform for dialogue, allowing participants to dissect sectoral challenges and co-create strategies to amplify their economic impact across the nation.
Driving formalization and structured entrepreneurship
The agenda centered on critical themes such as business formalization, skill enhancement for young traders, and the cultivation of a more organized entrepreneurial ecosystem. These priorities reflect the growing recognition that structured business practices are essential for unlocking new opportunities and fostering sustainable growth.
Unified vision for collective progress
Ismaël Sawadogo, President of the association, emphasized the transformative potential of collective action. ‘This gathering marks a commitment to solidarity and sustained collaboration. By pooling our insights, we can address the hurdles facing our sector and propose workable solutions that benefit everyone,’ he stated. The initiative also aims to establish a permanent consultation framework for young traders nationwide.
Breaking barriers to formal business participation
A key highlight of the forum was a dedicated training session on enterprise formalization. Organizers underscored its urgency in today’s fast-evolving economic landscape. Sawadogo highlighted the tangible advantages of operating within the formal sector: ‘Transitioning from informality to formality isn’t just a procedural step—it’s a gateway to accessing public procurement, financing mechanisms, and structured support programs. Our goal is to empower every young trader with the tools to thrive and contribute meaningfully to Burkina Faso’s progress.’
Participants also voiced shared concerns, including limited access to commercial spaces and bureaucratic bottlenecks in securing registration documents. These challenges, they argued, demand coordinated solutions from both public institutions and private stakeholders.
Endorsement from industry leaders
Roland Achille Sow, Chair of the Ouagadougou Chamber of Commerce and Industry, praised the initiative during his keynote address. He drew attention to the stark reality facing Burkinabè enterprises: ‘Shockingly, nearly eight out of ten businesses fail within a few years of inception. The choice is clear—do we accept fleeting ventures, or do we invest in enterprises that endure and support future generations?’
Sow reaffirmed the Chamber’s dedication to supporting formalization efforts, positioning it as a cornerstone of its strategic roadmap. ‘Structured businesses are the bedrock of economic resilience. They attract investment, foster innovation, and create a legacy beyond their founders,’ he noted.
A roadmap for a stronger trade ecosystem
The forum concluded with a renewed pledge from attendees to prioritize sectoral organization, continuous industry dialogue, and institutional backing. Their vision encompasses a trade landscape where young entrepreneurs are empowered, competition thrives, and the national economy stands more resilient against global pressures.
