World bank strengthens Mali’s vital health and education access

The World Bank has officially approved a $150 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA) to ensure the continuous delivery of critical health and education services across Mali. This substantial funding initiative is designed to address the complex climatic, security, and economic challenges that the nation has faced in recent years.

Known as the Mali Emergency Access to Essential Services Project, this program will bolster the consistent operation of both national and regional healthcare facilities. It will cover operational expenses, guarantee the supply of vital vaccines and medicines, and provide free healthcare services for women of reproductive age and children under five. Furthermore, the project aims to enhance the capabilities of health personnel to effectively manage increasing health risks linked to climate change. Within the education sector, the initiative will support students throughout their academic journey by supplying essential learning materials, offering school grants to the most vulnerable students, and facilitating the organization of national examinations.

This strategic operation plays a crucial role in advancing the World Bank Group’s broader employment agenda by safeguarding and nurturing human capital within Mali.

“By preserving access to vital health and education services, especially in an environment of significant budgetary constraints, this project actively protects the pool of future workers and their productive potential,” stated Clara de Sousa, World Bank Group Divisional Director for Mali. “Healthy, educated children, alongside healthy mothers, form the bedrock of a resilient and productive workforce for the nation.”

The project is projected to impact 2.3 million beneficiaries who will gain access to essential health services, with a specific focus on 1.4 million women and 391,395 children under five years old. In the realm of education, 1.1 million students are set to receive crucial schooling support and access to national examinations under established standards, thereby fostering educational continuity and the ongoing development of human capital.

This undertaking is designed to complement existing interventions by development partners and is built upon extensive consultations and dedicated coordination mechanisms, ensuring its effective and harmonized implementation across Mali.
