Senegal’s president terminates Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s mandate
In a televised address from the Republic Palace in Dakar, Oumar Samba Ba, Secretary-General of the Presidency, announced that Ousmane Sonko is no longer Senegal’s Prime Minister. The decision extends to all government members, who are now relieved of their duties.
« By decree number 2026-1128 dated May 22, 2026, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye has terminated the functions of Mr. Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister, and consequently, those of all ministers and secretaries of state within the government. The outgoing cabinet members are tasked with handling current affairs until further notice, » Oumar Samba Ba stated.
Tensions had surfaced in recent months between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko, who had previously mentored the president before his April 2024 election. A prominent opposition figure to former President Macky Sall, Sonko had initially planned to run for office himself but ultimately endorsed Faye as his replacement.
