Senegal president sacks prime minister Ousmane Sonko amid rising tensions
Dakar — Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye abruptly terminated the mandate of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the entire government on Friday evening through an official decree. The decision follows months of escalating tensions between the two leaders.
In a televised address delivered by the presidential secretary-general Oumar Samba Ba, the president confirmed the dismissal, stating, “The functions of Mr. Ousmane Sonko, Prime Minister, and consequently those of the ministers and state secretaries, have been terminated.” The outgoing officials have been instructed to handle current administrative affairs until a new government is formed.
From opposition to power: Sonko’s political journey
Once a vocal critic of former President Macky Sall (2012–2024), Ousmane Sonko was barred from running in the February 2024 presidential election after a defamation conviction stripped him of his civic rights. Protests erupted nationwide over concerns about Macky Sall potentially seeking a third term, further intensifying political unrest.
With Sonko ineligible, he endorsed his close ally Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the presidential candidate. Their alliance, fueled by a shared panafricanist vision, resonated deeply with Senegal’s disillusioned youth and secured a decisive victory in the polls. However, their partnership has since unraveled amid growing discord.
Sonko, known for his charismatic leadership and fiery rhetoric, had emerged as a key figure in Senegal’s political landscape. His passionate speeches galvanized young voters, propelling him to the forefront of the opposition movement against Macky Sall’s administration.
Signs of strain in the Faye-Sonko alliance
Despite their initial collaboration, tensions between President Faye and Prime Minister Sonko have steadily worsened. The rift became increasingly visible in recent months, casting doubt over the sustainability of their alliance. Observers noted that Sonko’s substantial influence within the government was a major factor in their electoral success, yet his continued prominence posed challenges to Faye’s authority.
The political divide reached a critical point as Sonko’s party, which dominates the National Assembly after a landslide victory in the November 2024 legislative elections, intensified pressures on the presidency. The power struggle between the executive and legislative branches has raised concerns about governance stability in the country.
Public reaction and immediate aftermath
Within minutes of the announcement, Ousmane Sonko took to social media to express relief, writing on Facebook, “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully at the Keur Gorgui residence,” referring to his home in Dakar. Shortly after, videos circulated showing his supporters gathering outside his residence, chanting his name in defiance of the dismissal.
The abrupt change in leadership marks a pivotal moment in Senegal’s political landscape, signaling a potential shift in the balance of power between the presidency and the ruling party. As the nation watches closely, the future composition of the government remains uncertain, with speculations swirling about the president’s next strategic moves.
