Senegal fans must self-fund world cup 2026 travel plans

The Senegalese government has firmly ruled out covering travel expenses for football enthusiasts heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, the minister of Sports, Khady Diène Gaye, confirmed. This decisive stance closes the door on any official supporter mobilization for the Lions’ journey to the global tournament.

Speaking on national radio Sud FM, Khady Diène Gaye outlined the government’s position, emphasizing that state resources will not be allocated for fan transportation to North America. The minister highlighted the sovereignty of each nation in determining its World Cup support strategies, stressing that Senegal would not be an exception.

Visa hurdles complicate official fan travel

« While we respect the passion of our supporters, Senegal cannot guarantee their participation in the 2026 World Cup due to current visa restrictions and logistical constraints, » the minister explained. She revealed that applications submitted by three prominent fan club presidents were rejected during the visa process, underscoring the challenges ahead.

« Our decision is final: Senegal will not organize or finance the travel of supporters to the United States for the tournament, » Khady Diène Gaye stated unequivocally. This announcement dispels earlier rumors of potential state-backed fan mobilizations, leaving the burden of travel arrangements squarely on individual supporters.

The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will see Senegal rely heavily on its diaspora communities and financially capable fans to cheer on the Lions from the stadiums. Without official backing, the team’s supporters will need to arrange their own flights, accommodations, and match tickets to witness the African side’s campaign in person.
