Mbacké recently hosted the esteemed leader of the “Patriots” movement. Ousmane Sonko, president of Pastef, arrived in the city to officially launch the party’s critical membership card sales campaign. This initiative is pivotal for Pastef as it gears up for upcoming electoral challenges, with the 2029 presidential election already firmly in its sights. Addressing an engaged assembly of militants, the Pastef leader first focused on fostering unity. Acknowledging existing tensions among local officials, specifically naming Dr. Fall Mbaye, Deputy Ahmadou Lö, and Moustapha Diop, Ousmane Sonko urged them to collaborate. “I have advocated for this everywhere I’ve been. Everyone must work together. This is not the time for disagreements. Unity must prevail,” he asserted, underscoring that cohesion is a vital strategic imperative for the party. Following this call for harmony, he commended the remarkable enthusiasm for membership card sales that had swept through Mbacké since the initial announcements. “Today, well before 4 PM, all 13,000 cards sent here were purchased. We had to place a new order from Dakar,” Ousmane Sonko proudly announced. He further noted that the overwhelming demand even caused technical saturations on the online membership platform, a clear indicator of the movement’s growing appeal.
Buoyed by this impressive success, the Pastef leader articulated an ambitious target: to enroll one million members solely within the Mbacké department by October, the campaign’s final deadline. “I am confident that the Mbacké department alone can generate this million members,” he declared to a resounding ovation.
Beyond mere mobilization, Ousmane Sonko also sought to guide his supporters’ discourse and issue a cautionary message to political rivals. He advised his militants to maintain a calm demeanor. “Do not engage in conflict with anyone. Do not respond to any provocations. If peace endures in Senegal, Pastef will sweep every election in this country. No election can elude us,” he affirmed. He also encouraged party members to concentrate on their organizational efforts and disregard “those who hold no genuine responsibility, have no following, and lack a legitimate political party.”
