Cameroon’s opposition leader Jean-Michel Nintcheu is calling on the Constitutional Council to formally recognize a power vacuum after President Paul Biya’s extended absence from the country.
President Paul Biya left for a private stay in Switzerland on June 7 and has yet to return to Yaoundé 44 days later. This prolonged absence has reignited discussions about the 93-year-old leader’s health. Within political circles and public opinion, reactions vary depending on political affiliation regarding the prolonged absence of the head of state from the Etoudi Palace.
In a Facebook post dated July 17, Jean-Michel Nintcheu, a former SDF member from Douala, urged the Constitutional Council to declare the vacancy of power. “The Constitutional Council must recognize the vacancy at the summit of the state,” he wrote.
The ruling party responds
The RDPC, the ruling party, has sought to reassure the public. “Power is not vacant. The Lion has not left,” stated Christophe Mien Zok, RDPC’s propaganda director. From Geneva, where he remains, President Paul Biya continues to sign official documents and congratulatory messages to foreign counterparts, including French President Emmanuel Macron on July 14 during France’s national holiday.
