half a century of health solidarity: Niger and China mark 50 years of medical partnership
On a historic day at Niamey General Reference Hospital, the Nigerien Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene led by Colonel-Major Doctor Garba Hakimi commemorated five decades of unwavering medical collaboration between Niger and the People’s Republic of China. The milestone event, held on March 25, 2026, celebrated decades of shared expertise, solidarity, and tangible impact on public health across the nation.
a legacy of professionalism and dedication
The Minister of Health emphasized the exceptional discipline, commitment, and professionalism demonstrated by Chinese medical teams throughout their fifty-year presence in Niger. These teams have continuously bolstered local health systems, enhancing healthcare access for millions of Nigeriens. In recognition of their contributions, the ceremony also featured the handover of essential medical supplies and equipment valued at nearly 99.2 million CFA francs, donated by the Chinese government to support the hospital’s operations.
Dr. Garba Hakimi highlighted the transformative impact of this cooperation in key areas such as patient care, health workforce training, skill transfer, and the introduction of advanced medical technologies. Over the years, thousands have benefited from improved health services, while the partnership has fostered deeper ties between the two nations. The Minister extended gratitude to China for its consistent support in addressing Niger’s health development priorities, affirming: “We hope this enduring alliance continues to flourish and deliver even greater benefits to our people.”
China’s enduring commitment to global health
Ambassador Lyu Guinjun, representing China in Niger, reflected on the remarkable journey of medical cooperation. Since 1976, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has dispatched nearly 800 highly skilled doctors and nurses from its top hospitals to support healthcare in Niger. Together with their Nigerien counterparts, these teams have treated approximately 1.8 million patients, embodying the spirit of friendship and service.
The Ambassador also underscored the global resonance of President Xi Jinping’s vision for a global community of health for all, which has gained widespread international support. He noted that China’s recently adopted 15th Five-Year Plan will further strengthen health coordination between the two countries, opening new avenues for collaboration.
from care to camaraderie: building lasting bonds
Du Zhenzong, head of the delegation from the Guangxi Health Commission, shared insights into the profound human connections forged through this partnership. Chinese medical teams have not only provided care but have also become ambassadors of Sino-African friendship. In half a century, they have:
- Delivered medical services to over 2.3 million people,
- Trained and mentored more than 45,000 health professionals, and
- Strengthened health infrastructure and systems nationwide.
Mr. Du emphasized that these teams leave behind more than just medical expertise—they build lasting friendships and resilient health systems.
a hospital’s gratitude and future vision
Daou Mamane, Director-General of Niamey General Reference Hospital, warmly acknowledged the Chinese medical teams’ five-decade-long support in improving public health across Niger. He praised the recent donation of medicines as a vital boost to both the hospital and the national health system, ensuring continued high-quality care for patients. Assuring donors of responsible use, he stated that all resources would be managed in full compliance with health standards and protocols.
celebrating friendship and signing a new chapter
The event concluded with a symbolic exchange of gifts between the Minister of Health and the Chinese delegation, followed by the signing of a new partnership agreement. This milestone underscores the enduring strength of Niger-China relations and their shared commitment to advancing health and well-being for all.
