N’Djamena’s national museum comes alive for inaugural night of museums

N’Djamena recently hosted the inaugural Night of Museums, a vibrant celebration of Chadian cultural heritage held at the National Museum of Chad. This landmark event, organized by the House of Cultural Heritage of Chad under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourist Development, Culture and Handicrafts, coincided with International Museum Day on Monday, May 18, 2026.

From 8 PM onwards, the museum grounds were infused with a lively cultural atmosphere. Guests were greeted at the entrance by the dynamic performances of the National Ballet of Chad, whose colorful traditional dances offered an immediate, immersive journey into the nation’s rich choreographic legacy.

“It’s truly spectacular to experience Chadian traditional dance through the Night of Museums. I’ve just stepped inside to explore the wonders of the National Museum, and already I am captivated by these artistic displays,” remarked Anne Marie-Thérèse, a visibly delighted visitor.

The nocturnal tour was thoughtfully structured into various sections, allowing attendees to freely explore the permanent exhibition spaces. Visitors engaged with a diverse and interactive program, which included guided demonstrations showcasing art objects, passionate narrations of traditional tales by griots and museum guides, screenings of documentaries highlighting Chad’s tangible and intangible heritage, and numerous artistic presentations.

For Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, director of the National Ballet, this initiative represents a pivotal opportunity.

“Our traditional dances are an integral part of our intangible heritage. We adorned the stage with items our ancestors used daily, creating a unique chance for the younger generation to discover these historically significant objects. We sincerely hope the Night of Museums can become a more frequent event, perhaps three times a year, as it offers an unparalleled moment for celebrating our culture.”

Notably, the Ambassador of France to Chad and their delegation also participated, underscoring the international interest in efforts to safeguard and promote Chadian cultural treasures.
