president goïta initiates construction of 15 new hospitals in Mali

Bamako, November 10, 2025. General Assimi GOÏTA, President of the Transition, officially commenced the Presidential Emergency Hospital Project by laying its cornerstone. This significant ceremony, held at the Korofina Reference Health Center in Bamako’s Commune I District, marks the inception of an extensive program designed to significantly upgrade Mali’s national healthcare infrastructure.

Colonel-Major Assa Badiallo TOURÉ, the Minister of Health and Social Development, highlighted that this ambitious project is a direct outcome of the General States of Health held in December 2024. These deliberations had underscored the urgent need to broaden access to medical services and elevate the standard of healthcare quality across the entire nation.

transforming Mali’s national hospital system

According to the Minister, this initiative aims for a comprehensive “modernization and restructuring” of the hospital network. It encompasses the construction of 15 brand-new hospitals and the conversion of existing Reference Health Centers (CSREF) within the Bamako District into fully operational District hospitals. The entire undertaking, financed exclusively through the national budget, is projected to take 12 months for facilities in Bamako and 24 months for those in regional areas.

The Presidential Emergency Hospital Project is structured around three core components:

  1. The upgrade of the seven CSREF facilities in Bamako’s arrondissements into modern district hospitals.
  2. The establishment of new district hospitals in the localities of Bla and Kangaba.
  3. The development of advanced regional hospitals in key cities such as San, Koutiala, Bougouni, Dioïla, Nioro, Bandiagara, and Koulikoro.

These upcoming medical facilities will be outfitted with cutting-edge medical technology, boast significantly expanded inpatient capacities, and offer a wide array of specialized services. Notably, this includes the integration of hemodialysis units within the hospitals located in Bamako’s 1st and 6th arrondissements.

project priorities and oversight

Following the inauguration, President GOÏTA reiterated the fundamental importance of public health as a cornerstone for national progress. He charged the Minister of Health with ensuring uninterrupted public services throughout the construction phases and adhering strictly to contractual timelines. The President also emphasized the project’s profound human dimension: to deliver high-quality medical care closer to all citizens, thereby reducing the need for costly medical evacuations and alleviating pressure on existing healthcare institutions.
