Le Mans promoted to Ligue 1 as Bastia relegated to Ligue 3
The LFP disciplinary board has confirmed the 2-0 victory of Le Mans over Bastia on Saturday evening, effectively sealing the Manceaux’s promotion to Ligue 1. Bastia, meanwhile, faces two immediate stadium closures and one suspended closure due to repeated crowd disturbances.
In a meeting held Wednesday evening, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) disciplinary commission ratified the outcome of the match between Bastia and Le Mans, played on the 34th matchday of Ligue 2. With only seconds remaining, referee Ruddy Buquet halted proceedings, evacuating players from the pitch after smoke bombs and firecrackers were launched from the stands toward the field.
Bastia avoids point deduction
The Corsican club was handed two enforced stadium closures and one suspended closure. However, it escaped a point deduction for next season—a penalty that had been looming. Bastia had been on probation following previous fan-related incidents less than six months prior. On December 5, the match against Red Star was abandoned before halftime after a smoke bomb landed on the pitch from the home supporters’ section.
Sébastien Deneux, president of the LFP disciplinary board, explained the decision: «In principle, points are deducted when a match participant is directly affected. Since no one was hit during the Bastia-Le Mans clash, we saw no justification to revoke the suspended closure.»
