France tightens student visa rules for Cameroon applicants
The French embassy in Cameroon has justified stricter financial requirements for Cameroonian students seeking admission to private French institutions. Diplomatic officials point to a rise in fraudulent visa applications as the reason for the increased scrutiny.
Why France has tightened student visa requirements for Cameroon
On July 16, the French embassy in Yaoundé held a press conference to explain the stricter financial criteria now required for Cameroonian students applying to private French institutions. The move comes in response to a sharp increase in fraudulent visa applications detected through the Campus France platform.
Common fraud patterns uncovered
According to Muriel Piquet-Viaux, Advisor for Cooperation and Cultural Action at the embassy, the most frequent irregularities include forged bank statements, manipulated financial records, counterfeit identity documents, and inaccurate proof of financial means. Consular authorities have introduced enhanced verification procedures to scrutinize all submitted documents.
New financial proof requirements
Students admitted to private French institutions must now provide evidence of full tuition payment or sufficient funds before a visa can be issued. For those who have already paid a deposit, the embassy states that procedures will depend on the specific institution but confirms that blocked funds will be released once the visa is approved.
Cameroon is the only African country affected
As of now, Cameroon remains the sole African nation subject to these stricter student visa rules. The decision has sparked widespread concern and criticism among families preparing to send their children to study in France.
