France has severed diplomatic relations with Burkina Faso following a sharp deterioration in bilateral ties, announcing the immediate withdrawal of all French diplomatic staff from the West African nation. This decisive move comes in response to Ouagadougou’s unilateral decision to cut off all diplomatic engagement with Paris.
The announcement was confirmed during a high-level diplomatic meeting where French authorities summoned the Burkinabè chargé d’affaires in Paris. On June 30, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs delivered a formal response to Burkina Faso’s decision, announced just days earlier on June 26, to terminate all diplomatic ties.
In a reciprocal action, France demanded that all Burkinabè diplomatic personnel leave French territory within seven days. This measure underscores Paris’s commitment to maintaining balanced and fair diplomatic protocols, regardless of the circumstances.
France denies terrorism allegations
French authorities strongly rejected claims made by Burkina Faso that Paris was supporting terrorist groups. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed these accusations as entirely unfounded, emphasizing that France remains steadfast in its opposition to terrorism and violence against civilians in the Sahel region. The country reaffirmed its dedication to the global fight against extremism and its support for regional stability.
Safety advisory for French nationals in Burkina Faso
In light of escalating tensions, France has issued a heightened security advisory for its citizens residing in Burkina Faso. With over 2,000 French nationals currently living in the country, authorities are urging heightened vigilance and caution. Meanwhile, more than 6,000 Burkinabè nationals reside in France, reflecting the deep connections between the two nations despite the current diplomatic rupture.
Years of growing tensions
Relations between France and Burkina Faso have steadily worsened since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power following the September 2022 coup. The military-led government in Ouagadougou has adopted a sovereignty-focused approach, frequently criticizing Western powers—particularly France—accusing them of undermining Burkina Faso’s interests. Since then, Burkina Faso has taken several steps to distance itself from France, including demanding the withdrawal of the French ambassador, terminating military cooperation agreements, and ending the presence of French counterterrorism forces that had been battling jihadist groups in the region.
In response, Burkina Faso has increasingly turned toward alternative international partners, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran, to strengthen its political and security alliances.
