Chile-Morocco friendship group reaffirms support for UN Resolution 2797 on Sahara
Morocco stands as a pivotal entry point to the African continent for Chile, fostering substantial potential for economic synergy between the two nations, particularly within the agricultural sector.
María Catalina Del Real Mihovilovic, the esteemed president of the Chile-Morocco parliamentary friendship group, reiterated the group’s unwavering support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797 concerning the Moroccan Sahara. Her declaration came during a recent visit to Rabat, following discussions with Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad.
During her press briefing, Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic emphasized that Resolution 2797 definitively establishes the autonomy plan as a “serious and lasting solution” to the long-standing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. She further clarified that this parliamentary friendship group, which encompasses members from various political parties, collectively and fully endorses this significant resolution.
Beyond diplomatic affirmations, Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic highlighted the considerable potential for economic complementarity between Chile and Morocco. She specifically noted the crucial role of Moroccan fertilizers in bolstering Chilean agriculture. Conversely, Chile, a key exporter of strategic minerals such as copper and lithium, can significantly contribute to Morocco’s rapidly expanding automotive industry.
The Chilean delegation also stressed the importance of forging strategic partnerships with the Kingdom across several other vital sectors. These include advancements in seawater desalination, technological innovation, and the burgeoning tourism industry, indicating a broad scope for bilateral cooperation.
Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic underscored the historical depth of the relationship, noting that the parliamentary delegation’s visit to Morocco coincided with two significant anniversaries: the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations, and the 22nd anniversary of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s historic visit to Chile. She affirmed that Chile’s foreign policy is a “state policy,” ensuring that its enduring friendship with Morocco transcends any specific political affiliations.
