The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is steadily reinforcing its security achievements and fostering deeper integration across key sectors. This was highlighted by Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, during a recent interview broadcast on RTN.
strengthening regional security through unified action
Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, the three founding members of the AES, have taken significant strides in military cooperation. A unified force and a joint operational headquarters, headquartered in Niamey, have been established to streamline security operations. This initiative is positioned as a cornerstone for coordinated efforts against regional threats.
diplomatic unity as a strategic pillar
The AES is also advancing its diplomatic agenda, with member states sharing a unified diplomatic card and enhancing coordination among their overseas missions. The goal is to amplify their collective voice in international forums and advocate for shared positions on global issues.
expanding integration beyond security
Beyond military collaboration, the AES is laying the groundwork for broader integration. Plans include the creation of an investment bank to fund development projects across the alliance’s territory. Additionally, joint media outlets—such as television, radio, and print—are being developed to strengthen institutional communication and counter disinformation campaigns targeting the Sahel region.
The alliance has also reaffirmed that international recognition remains a sovereign decision for each member state.
solidarity in the face of adversity
A high-level AES delegation, led by General Célestin Simporé, visited Bamako to express solidarity with Mali following the passing of General Sadio Camara. The delegation, received by Mali’s transitional President, General Assimi Goïta, conveyed condolences from Burkina Faso and Niger.
During the visit, the delegation paid tribute to General Camara, recognizing his pivotal role in advancing Sahelian military cooperation. They also reiterated their unwavering commitment to combating armed groups in the region, emphasizing the need to intensify efforts against terrorist threats.
